Top 5 Favourite Fictional Heroines.

To be fair to my previous post on unforgettable heroes, I thought I’d list my top 5 favourite fictional heroines. While I love to read about smokin’ hot men, the heroine is the make or break for me in deciding whether to continue with the book. If I immediately dislike the heroine, the book’s finished. But if the author creates a heroine who I a) would love to be friends with, or b) would love to be, then she’s got me hook, line and sinker.

So my top 5 fictional heroines are—again in no particular order.

1. Claire Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’ series. Claire is a strong female character thrown into a fish-out-of-water situation and she handles herself brilliantly. She’s gutsy, opinionated, foul-mouthed at times and the kind of woman the hero, Jamie Fraser, deserves.

2. Eve Dallas, from Nora Robert’s ‘In Death’ series. Brash, kick-ass, loyal, and hates fussy clothes and make-up, and one hell of a homicide cop, Eve Dallas is addictive. She has backstory to break your heart, and her empathy for the victims she ‘stands’ for, no matter if they are politicians or prostitutes, make her someone you can’t help rooting for.

3. Sugar Beth Carey, from Susan Elizabeth Phillip’s ‘Ain’t She Sweet’. When I first picked up this book, I thought, ‘How the heck am I going to like reading about a woman called Sugar?!’ Especially since Sugar used to be the popular, but bitchy girl at high school who made her younger half-sister’s life miserable. What a challenge for Ms. Phillips, huh? Well, she did it—turned a character who should’ve been completely unlikeable, into a flawed, warm and quirky heroine who I’ve never forgotten.

4. Elena Deveraux, from Nalini Singh’s ‘Archangel’ series. The brilliant thing about series is you get to see the characters you come to love grow—and in this series, ‘stretch their wings’. Elena is a complex, flawed and fascinating female character, and her relationship with Raphael and the other archangels, hauls you into Nalini’s world and won’t let you escape.

5. Maddie Moore, from Jill Shalvis’ ‘Simply Irresistable’. Sometimes an author does something so sly, so unexpected, that she causes you to fall for her heroine in the first few pages. That’s what Jill did to me with Maddie Moore, when we see Maddie feeling a little sorry for herself and eating a bag chips, only to come across the hero with potato chip crumbs on her sweater—which he notices. Haven’t we all had embarrassing experiences like this? I could immediately identify with this character, and the more I read about her the more I thought, “I could so imagine being friends with this woman!” and that made me totally invested in finding out whether she got her Happily Ever After.

I’d love to hear about your favourite fictional heroines.

What I’m reading this week: Finding Perfect – Susan Mallery. Sweet, sexy, and laugh out loud funny—I love these kinds of series. And since Finding Perfect is the first book in the Fool’s Gold series—yippee! This means I’ve a lot more to read in the next few months.

What I’m watching this week: Survivor. Yeah, one of my guilty secrets. But in my defense, Jeff Probst’s dimples are really, really cute.

This week’s favorite quote: In revenge and in love woman is more barbaric than man is. ~Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil.

Hot guy of the week: Vin Diesel. He’s ever so dreamy…
